The Upcoming Major Infrastructure Projects in Northeast India

The Indian government is keen to develop the northeast part of India, as the region often complains to face negligence in obtaining various development projects. Science and technology can render better living standards and more job opportunities. Nevertheless, the northeast region is important for India for its strategic geographical location, as it has a major impact on global politics.

For rendering science for unreached regions, the Indian government has started many initiatives. For the northeast region, the government has invested in many infrastructural projects. Find some of those projects in the following section.

Airport Development Projects

Northeast has poor connectivity through air, and thus Indian government has launched the “Act East” program to boost road and air connectivity to the region. The North-Eastern Council (NEC), consisting of representatives of all eight northeastern states, has taken the initiative to develop 12 airports in the region.

  • In 2018, Sikkim got its first airport, namely Pakyong Airport. The airport is accessible easily through a drive of 30 KM from Gangtok. The airport is operational at present.
  • Tezu Airport at Lower Dibang Valley is another exciting project for the northeast region. Experts anticipate that the airport will get completed soon.
  • The Shillong Airport will get a runway extension. After completing the extension, Shillong Airport will receive more passenger and cargo flights easily.
  • LGBI Airport of Guwahati is also under the radar of the department of science and technology. The airport’s runway extension will soon get completed.

Railway Projects

According to various science-based organizations across India, the railway network will bring more benefits to the northeast region than the airports. Since the northeast is a hilly region, railway network extension to this country was difficult. Nowadays, modern technologies can complete the job. Thus, the Indian government is keen to extend the railway network to this region as soon as possible. Find some important railway projects for northeast states.

  1. In 2018, the Indian PM inaugurated the Bogibeel Bridge, the largest railroad bridge in India. The five kilometres long bridge connects Arunachal Pradesh with Assam through rail and road networks.
  2. According to the India science technology and innovation portal, there will be 20 major railway projects in the northeast states.
  3. The railway line extension project till Sikkim from the NJP station is currently under construction. As soon as the project gets completed, Sikkim will get the first-ever railway station.
  4. The construction of the railway line from NJP to Tripura is also under contraction. Significantly, this railway line will pass through Bangladesh. PMs of both countries have signed a treaty in this regard.

The overall infrastructure boost in the northeast region will open the doors for science and technology. Northeast has unique flora and fauna. Thus, the place is ideal for researching nature, running biotechnology labs, etc. According to the reports, the department of biotechnology has a focus on the northeast states.

Apart from these things, ISRO also helped the northeast region to obtain better internet connectivity. According to the reports, ISRO provides geo-tagging support to more than 67 development projects across the northeast region.
