What is the role of the Central Leather Research Institute in developing the leather industry?

If you want to go through the history of the Indian leather industry then you should start with the formation of the Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI). Founded in 1948, CLRI is a premier institution of research and development that has achieved many milestones.

CLRI is an institution of repute that has produced many research papers and completed many patents. It came into being after independence but the ground for such an institute was already here. India has an advantage over others. It has the livestock that enables the country to take centerstage in leather production. But it became possible only after CLRI came into being.

Let’s understand the work culture of CLRI

It is a constituent laboratory under the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research. It works like a lab where research work is conducted and it works on the development of leather tanning in India. If you go through the number of livestock available in the country and the amount of leather produced, you will have a bigger understanding of the working of CLRI.

Presently India has 20% of the world’s cattle and buffalos. Also, it has 11% of the world’s goat and sheep population. The number of livestock in the country is huge and considering this number, it can be said that India can become a world leader in leather tanning and production. The country formed CLRI to boost lather production.

Today the country produces 2.5 billion square feet of leather annually. Also, India is the second-largest footwear producer in the world. The country produces over two billion footwear pieces annually. And it is possible only because of the technology innovation in India. CLRI has done a commendable job in every field including medical. Its research paper on burn injury treatment has transformed the way burn patients are treated.

A biological dressing for burn injuries

In 2003, CLRI produced research papers for a biological dressing for burn patients. The papers were checked and it was found that the treatment offered by CLRI is suitable for treating patients with second and third-degree burn injuries. Those patients can be treated perfectly with the treatment offered. It was really a milestone achieved as it changed the lives of burn patients.

Educational programmes

Being a premier institution, CLRI also offers educational programmes for people who want to make a striking career in the booming leather industry. It even tied up with another institution of repute for those programmes. It offers professional education courses with the National Institute of Fashion Technology. Both the institutes are taking science and technology in India a level up.

CLRI is continuously working on research papers and it is evident from the research work done on producing biodiesel from rice bran oil. The institute produces both research papers and professionals with the capabilities to lead the leather industry of the country.

Today CLRI stands for India technology and innovation. It has found a place in the world through its research work that is recognized even by developed countries. The leather industry has many hopes from the premier institution.
